Do you remember trying to escape the turmeric milk self-prescribed by mom in place of antibiotics when you had cold or flu? Well, now it is different when you voluntarily down mugful of turmeric milk, called ‘turmeric latte’ by the trendiest amongst us! It has caught up the fancy of all, as the spice is believed to help with everything from cancer to a cough, and is often given to children with a fever. Even modern medicine agrees that the turmeric-based-drink is one of the most healing beverages EVER. After all, turmeric is antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. It thus defeats germs and calms down colds, coughs, sore throats, fevers, toothaches, rheumatoid arthritis, headaches, menstrual cramps, muscular pain and a and a long list of ailments. It also heats up the body, providing quick relief from lung congestion and sinuses. Like the mentioned list was not enough, it also heals the digestive system. This spice is an excellent blood purifier, it boosts circulation, cleanses the lymphatic system and strains away impurities from the liver. Which makes it perfect for indigestion, diarrhea, stomach ulcers and colitis. And if you are feeling uneasy at night, warm turmeric milk produces tryptophan, an amino acid that induces peaceful and blissful sleep. And you might be surprised to know, that turmeric milk helps in the breakdown of dietary fats, thereby keeping weight in check! Add in the strong antimicrobial properties of honey; the healing powers of ginger; and the extraordinarily healthy fats and vitamins present in ghee or clarified butter and you have the ultimate dose of wholesome healing in a cup. Little surprise then that the ubiquitously named turmeric latte is all the rage from San Francisco to Oxford. Even Starbucks has jumped on the bandwagon. Like many trends, the turmeric latte may seem to have come out of nowhere, but it has been brewing for a while. A market research named ‘turmeric’ as one of its foods to watch in 2016. It has done the rounds of the wellness circuit – the blogs, websites and Instagram accounts of “clean eating” advocates – for several months, and recipes for the drink abound on Pinterest. And sales of turmeric lattes – listed on the menu as “Golden mylk” (the “y” is health-speak for non-cow milk) now outnumber that of regular lattes. Time to hit the kitchen, well it is not too difficult to brew your own golden drink. There are two versions – milk and non-milk. For the milk one or the original turmeric latte you will need, 2 cups whole milk, 1-inch knob of fresh turmeric, peeled and finely chopped (or 2 teaspoons turmeric powder), 1/2 inch knob of fresh ginger, and peeled and finely chopped 2 teaspoons ghee or clarified butter (optional). To prepare Mix together the turmeric, ginger and ghee; blend briskly till you have a fine paste. Pour the milk into a saucepan and spoon in the paste. Heat the milk till just below boiling point (little bubbles will begin to appear on the sides of the saucepan). Turn off the heat and cover the saucepan, allowing the turmeric and ginger to steep about 3 minutes. Then strain the concoction, stir in the honey and continue stirring until it dissolves and voila your turmeric latter is ready. To prepare, the non-diary turmeric latte, you will need, 2 cups almind milk or coconut milk, 1-inch knob of fresh dinger, peeled and finely chopped, dash of cayenne pepper, 1 tabelspoon of honey, 1 stick of cinnamon (optional), 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom (optional). To prepare combine the turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper, honey, ghee, cinnamon and cardamom; pour into a deep mug or bowl and keep aside. Heat the almond or coconut milk till just below boiling point (little bubbles will begin to appear on the sides of the saucepan). Add a teaspoon of the hot milk to the mug and mix everything till you get a smooth paste. Add the rest of the milk and mix well; allow to steep for 3 minutes. Strain the concoction; serve immediately. Well, what are you waiting for then, venture out and drink the golden drink!
